Title: The OGU-INRA cytoplasmic male sterility system in rapeseed : from genes to molecular modes of action
Host: Olivier Keech
Summary:
Rapeseed is a plant of high agronomic value throughout the world. Its breeding over the last 50 years has involved various steps of genetic improvement and the ability to efficiently produce heterotic F1 hybrids has been essential in the process. A decisive progress has involved the transfer of the genetic determinants of a nucleo-cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) from radish into rapeseed. This involved the transfer of a CMS gene named orf138 and that of an antidote genetic factor called the fertility restorer (or Rfo), resulting in an efficient system named OGU-INRA to produce male-restored (fertile) hybrid rapeseed lines. In this talk, I will relate the history of this work as well as our recent molecular data which revealed that Rfo acts as a highly specific translational inhibitor of the orf138 mitochondrial mRNA.
